Bald Eagle Perched

Last night, last night I had a strange dream
I was walking on the banks of a turbulent stream
Found a large bald eagle lying wounded on the path
An old man rode up to us, visible was his wrath
He lifted the bird with tender loving care
Dusted off its feathers and whispered in it's ear

Rise up, rise up my American eagle
Rise up and fly
Spread your majestic wings
Beneath Gods great blue sky
Show off your stars and stripes
Strength, pride and liberty
Rise up my American eagle
For brave men like us
Fought and died to set you free

You could tell without asking, the man is a soldier
Proud of his uniform, a wise and crafty warrior
As the big bird flew he sat himself up tall
Saying with a satisfied smile, this great nation must never fall
Inquired about him as he rode slowly into the sun
He replied without turning, they call me Washington

They faded into the landscape, man and regal bird
As I stood agape and pondered, the message I had just heard.

Rise up, rise up my American eagle
Rise up and fly
Spread your majestic wings
Beneath Gods great blue sky
Show off your stars and stripes
Strength, pride and liberty
Rise up my American eagle
For brave men like us
Fought and died to set you free
